Indonesian Teak Problem

Many companies that sell Indonesian based teak furniture can offer such low prices because of the immoral and criminal logging that goes on within the country, not to mention typically cheap designs and low quality craftsmanship. Most furniture that comes from Indonesia is made in the backyards or front porches of Indonesian families who get paid "starvation wages" so there is no real consistency to the quality of their products. These companies will put together quality "prototypes" for display in showrooms but when it comes down it, the majority of their products are high maintenance and will very likely fall apart. Also, an article in Business Week Magazine entitled "Rainforest Rescue" by Mark L. Clifford, Hiroko Tashiro, and Anand Natarajan, goes into detail about the illegal and immoral logging problems in Indonesia as well as the resulting civic unrest. The article goes on to state that many well known companies are cutting purchases from Indonesia, alot of them completely. Particularly, the American Forest & Paper Association proclaimed that its "members would no longer buy illegal wood products -- and has singled out Indonesia as a special concern". At TeakPlanter.com, we provide only high quality furniture developed from Costa Rican plantation teak that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Click here for the full article

Why Teak for Outdoor Garden Furniture?

Why is Teak Perfect for Outdoor Garden Furniture and Planter Boxes?

For centuries, teak has been renowned for its amazing strength and durability, especially concerning outdoor conditions. This wood, known to the scientific community as Tectona Grandis, contains natural oils and silica which are responsible for it's low maintenance properties, allowing it to be known as the wood that lasts longer than any other. These natural oils repel moisture, sealing the wood and preventing the rot and decay inherent to most other wood types. Another beneficial property is that it contains a natural insect repellent, in turn safeguarding it from pesky wood boring insects such as carpenter ants or termites. Overall, products made from this wood have the luxury of remaining maintenance free. Genuine Teak Outdoor furniture does not even require indoor wintertime storage. The durability is so great that it was used as the deck material in World War II warships and submarines. All of these characteristics make it obvious why Tectona Grandis would make the absolute best outdoor furniture known to man.

Teak Wood Appareance
Heartwood Teak is almost always a uniform golden brown without markings. Variation is moderate, and the grain pattern is typically straight, but sometimes will exhibit a wavy pattern. The texture of teak is coarse and is very oily, giving it its excellent waterproof properties. Tectona Grandis is a highly durable, hard timber with superb acid, fire, and decay resistance. Teak is also resistant to termites due to its resinous oils acting as a natural insect repellant. This lumber is highly resistant to chemical impregnation, although its resistance to decay makes preservatives unnecessary. Furthermore, the Dimensional stability of this lumber is excellent, as it retains its shape very well after seasoning. As well, this timber responds moderately to steam bending.

Teak Wood Durability
Teak is a very dense, heavy timber with a high compression strength parallel to the grain. This lumber exhibits a severe blunting effect on cutting tools, making it necessary to constantly maintain the sharpness of blades. This effect is caused in part by the silica content of teak which has been reported at about 1%. Tungsten carbide-tipped cutters are highly recommended. This material can be easily turned, moulded, bored, mortised, and carved aside from the fact that the blades dull quickly. For planing of teak wood the cutting angle should be reduced to 20 degrees. Gluing of freshly planed or sanded surfaces is easy and nails and screws hold very well, although pre-drilling is highly recommended. The wood takes polish, stain, and paint well, however it may be necessary to remove surface resins with a compatible solvent in order to guarantee good adhesion.

Quality Teak Wood Products

Teak from Seed to Seat - Furniture and Planters with Ethical Undertones. Here at TeakPlanter, we are not only proud of our products, such as our Teak Planter Boxes and our Outdoor Teak Furniture, we are also very proud of the ethics involved in bringing these top-of-the-line items into existence.Unlike other teak furniture retailers, we simply will not tolerate manufacturer practices which prove detrimental to the precious planet that nurtures us. All of our teak planters and teak furniture, in fact all of our products, have been painstakingly grown from seed in an effort to not only avoid deforestation but also to promote reforestation, further protecting an intricate ecosystem. And since our teak is grown from seed, the ability to produce high-quality materials is greatly enhanced. An experienced team specializes in monitoring and nurturing the healthy growth of what is to become some of the best material in the world for manufacturing outdoor teak furniture and planter boxes. This is so very important to us, as we feel that we could not claim such a high quality teak furniture product unless that product is made from only the highest quality materials. Once our quality standards have been reached, the task of creating beautiful teak furniture is place on our experienced and qualified, ethically employed craftsmen.Another thing we will not tolerate here at TeakPlanter is the tendency for teak furniture manufacturers to employ sweat shops as their labor force. When we say we wish to protect and preserve our delicate ecosystem, we include humankind in our good intentions. All those employed are employed and paid in a just manner, and are treated with integrity and dignity. We know how important a happily motivated team of craftsmen can be. Growing the best materials is meaningless without an experienced crew to transform them into inspiring works of teak furniture.
